Mental Health Month is celebrated each year in October, and is the perfect opportunity to highlight the work of the Mental Health Team at Campbelltown Hospital.

It feels like family when entering the Mental Health Adolescent Unit at Campbelltown Hospital. With a combined experience of more than 50 years, Nurse Unit Manager Vanessa Zardo, Clinical Support Officer Hazel Moore, and Administration Officer Sarah Dunston have worked with each other for over 16 years in their former space known as Gna Ka Lun.

Passionate about working with young people, the trio say the new environment has enhanced mental health care for young people through expanded patient areas and increased connectivity with other departments and services.

“Consumers have been amazed by the larger bedrooms, personal bathrooms, amazing views and therapeutic courtyards,” Vanessa said. “The move into the new space has changed our way of working, and the additional rooms provide opportunity to adjust our model of care to meet patient needs.’’ Vanessa said she was so pleased to be in the new area and see the benefits to consumers.

“Working closer with other Mental Health Units gives us the chance to develop our skillset and provide combined care for consumers.’’

Sarah and Hazel were initially a little apprehensive about the move. “It meant a change in the way we work, but staff are now more connected than ever before,’’ Sarah said.

“After working in Gna Ka Lun for 20 years, it was certainly a big change, but our diverse, supportive and connected team has made this transition achievable and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome.’’ Hazel said.

South Western Sydney Local Health District is pleased to have such committed staff providing years of service and care to our community. Thanks to Vanessa, Sarah and Hazel for your decades of dedication. We hope you like your new work environment!

The integration of the mental health units at Campbelltown Hospital was a key component of the $632 million Stage 2 redevelopment.
